Complement Panel 3 is designed to evaluate the activation of the complement system through the classical pathway by measuring C3a and C5 anaphylatoxins generated during complement activation. Elevated levels of C3a and C5a are indicative of complement activation and are associated with a variety of autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. Increased levels can be seen in diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis, and vasculitis, where complement activation contributes to tissue inflammation and organ damage. Additionally, C3a and C5a are critical in the pathogenesis of conditions like sepsis, allergic reactions, and immune complex diseases, where excessive complement activation exacerbates inflammation. Monitoring these markers can assist in assessing disease activity, identifying complement-driven inflammation, and guiding treatment strategies, including the use of complement inhibitors to control pathological activation.
