Mitogen’s Alveolar Proteinases assay is an exclusive autoimmune diagnostic test that detects antibodies to GM-CSF. Positive results are used to support the diagnosis of alveolar proteinosis. Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), also known as colony-stimulating factor 2 (CSF2), is a glycoprotein that is classified as a cytokine as it functions as a cell-signalling protein. Produced by a number of cells belonging to the immune system (macrophages, T cells, mast cells, natural killer cells, endothelial cells and fibroblasts), GM-CSF acts on macrophages and eosinophils. It also stimulates stem cells to produce granulocytes (neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils) and monocytes – essential cells of the immune system.
